• Since the late 1800s, Midwest
artists of the clay, potters by trade, have been building
stoneware, hand crafting their art, from a natural
material mined on the fringes of what was once an untamed
prairie.
• The latest generation of
potters molding their wares from this legendary Monmouth
Clay comes from Maple City Pottery in Monmouth Illinois.
Maple City Pottery
was founded in 1987
• Bob & his artisans learned
their trade,
perfected their art, from some of the country's recognized
potteries and, by his own admission, through pure trial
and error.
"My elements have
always been fire, water, earth, and air."
• Indeed, Maple City's much
sought after stoneware is fashioned and decorated by hand,
then kiln fired and salt glazed - a technique unique to
and perfected by Western cultures. When rock salt is added
to the kiln during the firing, predictably the results are
often a slight variation in color and appearance to the
otherwise durable, exterior finish. It is what makes Maple
City Pottery not only functional, but beautiful, too.
• Hand crafted pottery from
Maple City is lead free, dishwasher safe, and may be
safely used for cooking if sudden heating or cooling is
avoided. Do not use over a direct flame.
• And, in addition to the
diverse line of products shown here, Maple City
Pottery also accepts orders for specialty items - custom
pieces built individually and decorated to a customer's
desire. Special quotes for these items can be provided. •
